A theoretical model that small molecules after pinocytosis of microglia are preferentially transported to lysosomes and "molecular sieve" sorting promotes antigen presentation

The research paper published online in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2015 "A novel size-based sorting mechanism of pinocytic luminal cargoes in microglia" was the first to discover the existence of "molecular sieve" mechanism in pinocytosis activity of microglia. The pinocytosis activity can preferentially transport small molecule antigens to lysosomes, and promote antigen enrichment and its binding with MHC class II molecules, thereby improving the efficiency of antigen presentation. This discovery is of far-reaching significance in revealing the pathogenesis of microglia-related neuroimmune diseases (such as multiple sclerosis). It may be a potential measure to interfere with such diseases for blocking the "molecular sieve" effect in cells to reduce the immune response. The research was reviewed by the editor for its groundbreaking findings and was selected as the current highlight article.
