This study published in Science in 2006 found that in the hippocampus the stimulation for neuronal LTP induction can also induce synaptic LTP of neuron-NG2 glial cells. The LTP induced on NG2 glial cells depends on the activation of the calcium-permeable AMPA receptors (without GluR2 subunit) and the increase of intracellular calcium of the NG2 glial cell.
