It was established with the support of the Shanghai Medical College, the State Key Laboratory of Medical Neurobiology, and the Ministry of Education's Frontiers Center for Brain Science. The institute is dedicated to fundamental and translational research in the field of brain science. Professor Duan Shumin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, serves as the inaugural director.

The research areas of the Institute for Translational Brain Research encompass the following: In the field of fundamental research, the institute is dedicated to elucidating the mechanisms of neural signal processing, the development and plasticity of brain structure and function, the neural circuitry underlying brain function, and its regulatory mechanisms, as well as the mechanisms of brain diseases and neural modulation interventions. In terms of translational research, the institute aims to establish interdisciplinary research platforms by intergrating brain science with medical and engineering disciplines. It seeks to address national strategic needs and focuses on the development of cutting-edge technologies in brain science, as well as their application in the fields of fundamental brain research, brain function regulation, diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases, and artificial intelligence.

The Institute for Translational Brain Research has made a series of advancements since its establishment. It has added 14 national-level talent projects and formed the Key Innovative Team of " Mechanisms and Interventions of Innate Behaviors and Their Disorders" in Shanghai. Over 130 research projects have been initiated, including several major national and provincial research tasks. This includes 10 projects from the China Brain Initiative, with a total funding exceeding 170 million RMB. Significant scientific research achievements have been accomplished in both fundamental and clinical neuroscience. The institute has published 41 high-level papers as the first or corresponding author in renowned international journals such as Nature, Cell, Neuron, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications, and PNAS. Multiple patents have been granted in fields like gene editing, brain organoids, brain tumor targets, and multiphoton imaging. The institute has established a postdoctoral workstation and conducts independent recruitment and training for postdoctoral researchers. Currently, there are more than 30 postdoctoral fellows, including those in international talent introduction programs, Shanghai Super Postdoc, Shanghai Rising-Star Postdoc, and Fudan Super Postdoc. A secondary discipline, "Neuroscience and Translational Research," has been added, enabling independent recruitment and training of graduate students. The institute has nearly a hundred graduate students. Additionally, the institute is involved in the construction of the State Key Laboratory of Medical Neurobiology and the Ministry of Education's Frontiers Center for Brain Science. The experimental platforms have been established and put into use, providing strong support for high-level scientific research at the institute.

The Institute for Translational Brain Research is participating in the Shanghai Municipal High-Level Local University Development Plan, which includes the construction of first-class disciplines in basic medicine and the development of peak disciplines in Shanghai. It implements the academic special zone policy regarding recruitment and operational management. The institute has made significant efforts to attract high-level outstanding talents from both domestic and international sources. Currently, there are 27 independently operating research groups, and an interdisciplinary talent cultivation system has been established. Relying on the abundant clinical resources of the affiliated hospitals of Fudan University, the Institute for Translational Brain Research fully leverages the advantages of both fundamental and clinical aspects within Fudan University. It actively enhances the original innovation capabilities of its research teams and proactively aligns with the national primary strategic needs and the health demands of the people. The goal is to establish an internationally influential research institution that excels in both fundamental and translational neuroscience, aiming to become a world-class institution.

The Institute for Translational Brain Research is actively recruiting and welcomes enthusiastic researchers in the field of neuroscience and translational science, especially those with interdisciplinary backgrounds, to apply. We warmly welcome top-notch, outstanding, excellent, and young talents from both domestic and international sources to join the Fudan University Institute for Translational Brain Research!
