This is a cover article published in neuron in May 2006. It was highly praised by journal comments in the same period, stating that this work "uncover a presynaptic mechanism that enables rapid conversion of nonfunctional synapses to functional ones", which “stems from its ability to bring together several disparate earlier observations" and integrates the activation of presynaptic silent synapses, the signal transduction of BDNF and TrkB in synaptic function and synapse formation, the maturation of the synaptic vesicle pool and the role of cytoskeleton proteins in synaptic maturation. This is also the first time that Chinese scientists have published a cover article in the magazine.
