Dr. Zhong is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Translational Brain Research, Fudan University and a joint-appointed Professor at the SANS Neuroscience Center. He received his bachelor's degree in biotechnology from Jilin University in 2010 and his master's degree in Neurophysiology from Jilin University in 2013, where he focused on neural circuits related to depression. In 2020, he earned his Ph.D. from the Institute of Neuroscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he studied the neural mechanisms of decision-making. From 2020 to 2025, he conducted postdoctoral research at Janelia Research Campus the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), focusing on visual perceptual learning in mice. In 2026, he joined Fudan University. His major research findings have been published in journals such as Nature, Nature Neuroscience, and Neuron.

The laboratory primarily studies the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive processes, such as perception (particularly vision), decision-making, as well as learning and memory. Using mice as the main model organism, the lab combines large-scale calcium imaging (up to 50,000 neurons), optogenetics, machine learning (AI), and virtual reality technologies to explore the neural mechanisms underlying cognition.
