Mechanism of action potential initiation in neocortical pyramidal neurons

We found a segregated distribution of Na+ channel subtypes Nav1.6 and Nav1.2 at the axon initial segment (AIS). Nav1.6 determines action potential initiation, while Nav1.2 subsequently promotes its backpropagation towards the somatodendritic compartments. Hu et al., 2009.
