The function of inhibitory microcircuit in the neocortex is regulated by neuronal membrane potential (Vm) levels.

We found that cortical recurrent inhibition mediated GABAergic inhibitory interneurons (IN) can be regulated by the membrane potential levels of pyramidal cells (PC). Subthreshold Vm depolarization in presynaptic PC enhances action potential-induced EPSPs in IN and thus causes larger inhibition in postsynaptic PC. Zhu et al., 2011.
